Traditionally Design and technology has been thought of as "Craft" i.e. work of no real importance, just keeping the students busy with a non-academic subject. However modern times have changed technology education in schools. Design and technology is the only subject they take where students can show that they can take a problem from start to a manufactured and tested solution. These skills are valuable in further education and industry no matter what you do. At some time you will need to be able to breakdown a problem, analyse it, research possible solutions and produce an answer. This make take weeks and be formally documented or moments and happen in your head - but if you don't learn to do it you will always be the person who is told what to do. Career Prospects Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Design Consultancy, Marketing and Advertising. Aside from particular career choices, the subject provides students with a range of problem solving approaches that can be applied to many of life's day to day challenges The design and technology education specialises in project management and designing to meet the needs of the client. Effective time management is emphasised throughout a range of varied design tasks, which encourage the student to utilise a range of ICT and Key Skills, in the development and manufacture of new innovative products. The subject encourages students to adopt a realistic and professional approach to designing and as a consequence of this there are some investigative visits to local industries and exhibitions. The application of creativity and invention through the manipulation of materials produces rich rewards for many people, who derive great satisfaction from the practical application of their academic studies. Design and Technology Design and technology is a creative activity. It is not merely the 'the appliance of science', but is concerned with the designing and realising of practical solutions to real problems. The process of designing is the heart of the subject. It is also about developing attitudes and skills consistent with life in a modern technological society. The content broadly concerns the nature and characteristics of natural and manufactured materials and the nature of control and transformation of energy. As an exporting nation we need creative designers and technologists if we are to survive in this developing modern industrial world. The British government has reinforced this view by making design and technology education a major component of its education policy.

10/9/07's d&t lesson! (:
hi everyone, okay... let me recall what had happened on last week's d&t class.
firstly, we go through a few topics... [ but cant remember what is it, find it out later]
then, we started to do our night light. For me, i left a little part of cutting the acrylic,
so after i complete the cutting, i went to use sand paper to make the sides smoother.
after that, i went to dril holes using the machine. [ will check the name later ]
i had drilled 3 holes because the 1st 2 hole i drilled was tilted, and my night light won't be standing straight. after when i just finish to drilled 3 holes, time was up already.
so we have to stop work. and i can only continue in the next lesson. which is tomorrow.
hopefully i can finish my night light (:

this is a youtube video that i found.
and this video is about making something like a key chain,
he uses the acrylic plastic, to make the key chain
while we used it for our night light and in our school,
we uses a machine, and we just have to move the acrylic,
and follow the lines. but in this video,
the person uses his own hand and move the machine or something.
so i think it will be more inconvinent, and the things that he made
are so nice ! =X hahas. okayys.. enjoy! ^^

what we did yesterday! ^^ [27/8/07]
after some teaching by mr soo from the power point slides,
we went to complete our night light.
the material used for our night light was called arcylic.
it come in difference colours.
and we are suppose to draw our choosen idea on the arcylic.
so that we can cut out the night light following the lines.
for me, i created a elephant night light.
the cutting went smoothly, but i didn't complete the cutting because of insufficent time.
and one of my classmate xiao xiong, accidentally cutted off his night light head! haha! :D
he did one figure which looked like a tortise.
but lukily, there's still hope for him. mr soo will teach him how to glue back next time.
i think he should be more careful next time,
this teaches us that we should be paying very attentively when we are doing our 'jobs'
and huimin, our group's leader did a fast job.
she is at another part of the workshop when i was cutting.
i think she's doing some sort of polishing.
and eraine, did a mouse with one hat.
many girls was scared with the machine, because the machine work very fast.
afterthat, the lesson ended when the bell rang.

What is design?
-Design is to prepare the preliminary sketch or the plans for (a work to be executed), eg. to
plan the form of structure of: to design a new bridge.
-Design is to plan and fashion artistically or skillfully
-Design is about creating a product that has a distinctive look or feel about it. Different disigners
have differnet ideas so the products they create do not look the same. For examples, look at
the clocks below. They are design in different way.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY!
Design is about being innovative. We can improve product like handphones and many other things in the world using the advance technology avalible in the modern days.
We can also use many type of materials to design things like house furnitures, things for decorations and etc. Here are some of the examples of the basics materials; wood , metal, plastics, ceramics, glass, minerals and etc.
We can also use lines to design. Below are the some examples of lines
Like-vertical lines: represent demand attention like a tall building wide.
jagged lines: represent a sense of boldness.
strengthcurved lines: represents smoothness and gentleness.
slanted lines: represent suggest movement, like the front of a racing car short.
crisp lines: represent youthfulness and funlightning bolts.
Wavy lines: represent a convey a flow of movement.
